The renaming of the island to its current name, Skopelos, took place during Hellenistic times. On the south side are most of the beaches that are "drenched" in green from the forest pine. Skopelos has the shape of a saxophone, with the "neck" pointing northwest, and the "bell" lying on the east. The second largest settlement is Glossa village situated on the northwestern tip of the island, just above Loutraki harbour. It is a tranquil beautiful village with traditional houses, worth visiting.
